Pre-Christmas Fishing - Rob Kearvell

A bit uncanny, I was fishing in Sydney at Lake Narrabeen over the Christmas break as well. Bit slow on the Flathead with two of 40cm and one of 47cm. Locals were finding it a bit tough too. These were caught within 500m of my brother’s house that fronts onto the park and lake. Heaps of huge jumper mullet, must look into the ways of catching these suckers as even in my NSW/ACT days were near impossible unless using a net. Caught the flatties on a 6cm prawn look alike and a 6cm red/black/gold sparkle grub wriggler. Prawn was recommended by the local tackle shop.

We are off to Melbourne (6days) 01FEB25 then Tassie until Thursday before Easter. Hope you had a great break and will catch up on our return. Rob

WVFG Trip to Port Hughes 6 - 10 May 2024

Article submitted by Rob and the Dream Team!

4 days fishing at Port Hughes with 3 boats captained by Alan, Greg and Ben. Success for the Ben/Rob team
who benefitted from Ben's local knowledge of the Bay area. Fish were a litle scarce for two crews
although the team of Alan/Lofty did moderately well.

Photos of the haul caught by Ben and Rob are shown below and additional 35 calamari
caught over the 4 day period.

Pt Hughes fishing report by Lofty

Good weather greeted us when we arrived on the Monday so Alan  and I headed out on the water. Arrived back with 3 whiting.
Tuesday, good weather again so we fished all day for 12 whiting. Wednesday again good weather, we fished our butts off for not even a bite.
Thursday out again till 4pm with only 1 fish, then local knowledge (spikes brother , Ben) led us to Sims Cove where we landed 2 fish for Lofty and 7 for Alan.

All in all a good week.

An enjoyable 4 days away with the War Veteran Fishing Group at Port Hughes. Weather for Tuesday and Wednesday was great however the fish had gone on holidays somewhere else. A few whiting, gar and crabs were caught. The Monday night was a good time for a BBQ for the lads with an opportunity to talk and plan for the fishing activity.

Fishing with Alan and Lofty - Port Victoria

Pt Victoria trip 11 – 15 February 2024

Alan and Lofty left home at 9am on Monday arriving around midday, stowed gear at accommodation which turned out to be quite good with a functional fish/cleaning area.  We headed out fishing asap. Alan found some good spots and we got 14 good sized whiting before calling it a day.

Tuesday was blowing a gale so no fishing!

Wednesday rather than celebrate Valentine's day we got on the water by 8am, still rough, and Lofty took a while to get his ‘sea legs’ working! Good fishing day with 38 to 46cm fish being caught. We bagged out by 11am. We rang our wives and wished them Happy Valentines day.

Thursday back to the same spot.  This time 34 to 38 cm fish to bag out with by around 11 again.

Friday was not wasted and our good run back on water 8am till 11.  Put 8 in the esky to take home.
A good weeks  fishing, nice weighty fish. Good company.   Might do it again!!
Lofty.

Float making

Float making activity ready for our garfish and herring rigs

Activities include fishing/crabbing trips both local and to venues
such as Port Victoria, Edithburgh and other locations where we can
fish from boats owned by members. We organise reduced rate charters
using operators who are very competent. We also fish from the shore,
or jetties, and go cockling. We have sinker making and
knot tying/rig making days, which usually end up with a BBQ.
At the end of each year we have a social get together, and present
a 'Fisherman of the Year' Award, and we keep a 'Record Catches' list.

Membership is open to any veteran and the members of their family.
